However, I think emptiness will be crucial again soon thanks to DDD!!!

Watching the video posted by YES showcasing the DDD deck, emptiness will definitely see play again soon. I have not read much of the ddd's effects but from the video it seems to have alot to do with special summoning and gaining advantage everytime something is special summoned/ sent to grave etc. Although it will definitely be a format with multiple MSTs, emptiness is too good not to run against DDD because it relies on DDD to have an out to emptiness to be able to play yugioh.

Jokes on me !!!mike9944http://www.blogger.com/profile/14655647418055737434noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-78316171109312306.post-90061573313795661972014-07-14T07:38:00.001-07:002014-07-14T11:12:42.026-07:00Of Tongue Twisters and Format ChangeWhen I first started keeping up with the OCG, the decks had just started playing breakthrough skill and vanity emptiness, because breakthrough was the best answer to a delteros summoned from the star seraph monsters and emptiness was a insane vs any deck relying on star seraph as an engine.

But as Heroes were introduced into the format, people decided that breakthough was subpar and they rather just dealt with the monsters themselves with cards like bottomless/ torrential/ prison. Vanity still stays as a staple card (although quite a number of the decks have reduced from 3 to 2 ) because it isn't terrible against heroes and is overall a very solid card in the current meta.

As of now, more and more japanese players on devpro are siding gorz as an out to heroes because having 2 monsters is incredibly hard for heroes or any beatdown deck to deal with.

Just this afternoon, a friend of mine asked me to read up on Qliphoth, a new archetype which will be introduced in the next set (i think). It took me a while to read through every single card and till now I have no idea how to pronounce the name.

So, first an introduction to qlipot:

Qlipots are the first deck that revolves around pendulum summoning to be considered competitive. Each and every single monster is a pendulum monster between the scales of 1-9. Most of its monsters are of level 5-8 so they all fall perfectly in between the scale ranges of the qlipot monsters.

Each of the qlipots have a special clause in the pendulum zone which is : Only Qlipot monsters can be special summoned. This is a good restriction clause because if you could summon anything else, as you read on on, it would be totally insane.

They also have additional clauses which increases your monsters attack points or your opponents monsters depending on which card you have.

The first card to think of when it comes to pendulum would be odd eyes dragon. This card acts as a ROTA for any pendulum monster, however it is slightly slow because you have to wait till the ep which is sorta like kuribandit. Odd eye's main flaw all this time was never its design - its insane , but that no pendulum monster was worth playing and the overall mechanic just sucked badly.

Qlipots have a themed odd eyes, known as qlipot tool. This is the best card in the deck ATM because you can pay 800 to add any qlipot card (including s/t) to your hand. The best thing? Its a rota not a kuribandit and you dont have to wait until the ep to use its effect.

The whole point of these monsters is that they toolbox themselves, and they get effects based on tribute summoning.

The rest of the qlipots that have been introduced are level 6,7,8 respectively. Both the level 6 monsters act like atlanteans. These are the 2 main qlipots you want to pendulum summon out. When tributed, these monsters return a monster to their owner's hand or destroy a spell/ trap. Both of these monster have 2400 attack.

Then there are the other 2 qlipot monsters. One is a level 7 monster which has an effect whereby if you tribute summon at least 1 qlipot monster to summon him, you can summon any 2 qlipots from the deck (but they will be destroyed in the ep). The 2nd one is just a random beatstick which has an attack twice effect and piercing damage.

So, lets debunk each qlipot card one by one.

http://yugioh.wikia.com/wiki/Qliphoth_Archive

http://yugioh.wikia.com/wiki/Qliphoth_Genome

Archive and genome are the level 6 monsters. These monsters let you get effects based on the pendulum summoning methods. Being 2400 attack and 1000 defence is also extremely handy because both these monsters resemble monarch's special effects.

Take note that you can tribute them for anything like caius also and they still resolve.

http://yugioh.wikia.com/wiki/Qliphoth_Disk

Qlipot disk is your level 7 2800 attack monster and the otk monster in the deck. By tributing at least 1 qlipot, you can summon 2 out. Luckily you cant special summon any other monsters besides qlipot if any of your pendulum scales are qlipot monsters. If not you can easily just use this as a rescue rabbit and summon 2 monsters to xyz summon a felgrand/ dragosack etc.

There are people trying to run entermate purple cat to bounce a pendulum monster to the hand. So the idea would be to have maybe a cat and a qlipot, and after pendulum summoning and resolving disk, you can bounce the qlipot in the pendulum zone to bypass the restriction clause. This lets you summon felgrand/dragosack at will. By running cat and odd eyes, its also possible to have those 2 cards in your pendulum scale and not have to use a qlipot (although that would take a god hand)

http://yugioh.wikia.com/wiki/Qliphoth_Shell

Shell is the last revealed qlipot and seems to be the worst among the other qlipots. However being able to inflict huge amounts of damage is pretty gamebreaking. However, having qlipot disk summon 2 shells to otk, doesnt seem so bad does it, considering the shells will just go to the extra deck and return after your next pendulum summons.

Overall, these cards are incredibly insane as they just tutor each and every single copy and have good otk capabilities.

But wait!, theres an additional clause which lets each monster become level 4 and to be normal summoned as an 1800 vanilla (which still gets sent to extra deck when destroyed). This gives the deck extra leverage when you brick without being able to pendulum summon.

And as icing on the cake, each qlipot cant be affected by monster effects which have lower levels/ ranks.

Support cards in the deck include return of the monarch. It was clear that qlipots were meant to be abused with the card as they fit the stats on the return perfectly.

You could also play storm forth monarchs to clear annoying monsters and make sure your level 6-s arent dead. Heck, if you tribute a level 6, and then tribute 1 of your opponents monsters for disk, you can just summon another 2 monsters from deck and potentially otk.

And the best thing about pendulum summoning? The pendulum monsters are like dragon rulers ! They recur ery turn as long as they arent BTH-ed/ wing blast/ space time trap holed (insane pendulum stopper card).

This leads us to think why cards like vanity emptiness will become obsolete. It would seem pretty good considering emptiness can stop pendulums.

1) Vanity stops the special summoning but nothing is actually done to the monsters, they remain in hand/ extra deck and doesnt cause any economical card loss. In TCG dragon ruler format post rejuv, people started cutting emptiness because it doesnt deal with an established field, and if you had emptiness, any other trap would do the exact same thing, with the ability to actually deal with the monster summoned (such as warning, compuls/ BTH/ torrential)

2) storm forthof the monarchs, With this card in qlipoth, it seems extremely easy to just tribute whatever monsterthey were protecting with vanity and just summon a caius/ qlipoth level 6 etc and deal with the board.

3) last but not least, when pendulum becomes a thing, and odd eyes/ qlipot tools being the toolboxers of the deck, you can bet your ass everyone and his dog will run 3 mst to slow down the deck. And MST is the best answer to emptiness.

The worst part is that pendulum is a new mechanic introduced by Konami, you will definitely see more support for the mechanic to make it more imbal. ATM, KOnami is on the right track as they are introducing more rotas as it seems to be the best way to make pendulums a thing. Qlipots are just the tip of the iceberg, and lets not forget that the cards we know are only the ones leaked, we dont know any of their themed spell traps and there is a chance that there are more qlipot monsters in the set.

Just a short post today although I will debunk some of the techs that they are using, as i've tested most of them.
1) Goblin bird- I used to test one of this card as a one-of in pure heroes because it made in-hand shadow mists live and instantly nets you a dark law. It can also make a 1 card rank 4 with either mist/airman as both cards replace themselves. Very solid card however its drawbacks are that if you arent using it for a rank 4, placing it in defence means you lose 1 card (usually itself) to a monster, and using a trap to protect goblinbird is a terrible strategy.

2) Tin Goldfish- cool overall and a better goblinbird. However not ROTA searchable.

3 Royal Command

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As VERZ returns into the meta with its ability to play floodgates and its monsters being inherently bigger than heroes/ tella's, it seems that hero hands could be a good meta call going into any event, as hands are a huge power play and the deck having an easier time placing monsters in the grave to abuse with soul charge. Its disadvantages would be a first turn dark law which relies on you having to draw a trap to deal with it, or to pray your opponent doesnt have a trap to deal with your r4 combo to out dark law.

Destiny Heroes are really solid atm too due to the speed the deck has, however its main problem is playing cards like destiny draw + diamond dude. Its a 2 card combo which is equivalent to trade in+ blue eyes, or consonance + tuner whereby drawing 1 or the other results in a dead draw. Luckily the deck searches the dheroes quite efficiently, and its saving grace is that diamond dude alone isnt as bad of a terrible draw like bewd without ravine, or dragon tuner without a ruler, as you can pair it off with a bubbleman, or HC halberd etc. However, would you really rely on this strategy since its flaws are fairly obvious?

Most of the sidedecks resembled what i have been testing for a while being 2-3 dprison, 3 royal commands, 1-2 s/t destroyers, and a combination of either super poly/ maxx c / raiou etc.

It also really peeves me how some of those decks can play hero alive together with soul charge, they conflict way too often to prove to be a consistent strategy, altho hero lives can be conserved as a last resort power card to get out a dark law, but regardless, it still conflicts way too often.

Heroes currently receive huge support in the form of Masked Heroes. What was a slower version : Gemini Spark is now replaced by Masked Change, a new quick spell which is searchable, and doesnt require a specific monster, and can be used on any hero monster you possess.

So, let's discuss the cards individually:

1) Dark Law- I won't go into depth with dark law because by now, everybody knows what it does. Konami made it quite balanced in the sense that 2400 attack is really weak and can be outted quite easily. It doesnt have any built in protection like Felgrand, and can be outted with Compulsory, BTS etc. However, it is still a really good card, and if theres anything we've learnt from YGO, its that just cos a card can be outted by a trap, doesnt make it any less good of a card.

Dark Law makes it particularly good vs satella knights going first, as they need to draw a trap to out it. If you can protect the dark law, you win quite easily. However, as good as it seems vs shaddolls, its actually not, a simple shadoll fusion clears it, and it doesnt prevent shadolls flip effects from happening. This would not be the play I would make if i am versing a shaddoll opponent.

Note that drawing a card (like from upstart) is counted as adding and will cause dark law's effect to trigger.

2) Kamikaze- Another decent monster. Its effect to prevent battle, and that it cant be destroyed in battle is hardly relevant as its easily outted by honour ark, castiel etc. Its main function is a wind mask hero so that you can abuse airman with. the draw effect is very very good in heroes you need cards to thin the deck. Well timing your kamikaze can be very devastating for your opponent and its effect makes it a threat in the mirror match if you go against a Mask hero Kouga

3) Kouga- The last monster and at first sight probably the worst. However, its probably one of the most useful mask heroes because its effect can be chained to, and acts like a pseudo honest. Kouga can put huge damage on board, which is very important in the hero deck. However, its downside is having to run E hero Alias, a bad card, a brick, and a card which hardly contributes to your comboes. If the meta turns out to be hero mirrors, you can bet its well worth maining one Alias. Alias however isnt that terrible backed up with Vanity Emptiness, particularly against Tella Knight etc. However its still a subpar card.

4) Mask Change 2- At first glance this card seemed crazy. But, its actually not as good as you think it is, mainly in Heroes. Opening with it is terrible , because its a bad investment, its cost is too steep, and the fact that you had to summon a monster with a higher level reduces its versatility. In a pure hero deck, you would never want this card, because Mask change does the exact same thing but much better. However, it is good for other decks which want to abuse mask heroes like infenity, shadolls etc.

5) Form Change- And dont get me started on form change, its dead most of the time, a horrible card to draw all around and only good for otk-ing, which translates to you being in a winning position so you should already be winning anyway. Bad card bad design.

6) Mask Charge- A very nifty card. Acts like salvage, and a 1 card of any mask hero you choose. You can return fusions too, and overall very good card. Card advantage and options are always welcome.

7) Contrast hero Chaos- Sweet card in general, with a very good effect (Solemn Judgment anyone?) but its requirement is pretty steep. It is very very rare that you will be summoning it because to have 2 Mask heroes in grave and to have miracle fusion is very unlikely and can only be good in late game. Most of the time your go to card for Miracle is Absolute Zero.

8) E HERO Core- The one card I never tested. No comments about it (i dont even know its effect)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Matchups across the board:

1) Tella Knight - Tella is one of this deck's worst matchups because the other deck just puts a steady stream of beatsticks that Hero cant deal with. They gain alot of advantage very very easily and churn monsters out. Heroes, having naturally lower attack, and playing lesser monsters in the deck just lose out. In theory , heroes would have to draw mask change or a trap to be in a commanding position, thus making it the inferior deck. The best way to play against tella would be to pray you went first and make dark law, or just going for the OTK, depending on the circumstances. A very cool tech to deal with tella would be to main/side 2 copies of the hands. This makes going 2nd much more favourable. Alot of the time, Hands put alot of pressure on tella, and you can easily blow them out, as well as cause 2 for 1 trades. If they refuse to set traps to play around the hands, you are in a really strong position. Their only out is probably castiel, as nobody extra decks dweller anymore.

2) Shaddolls- Another matchup which is very very risky. It is abit hard game 1 because shadolls will stall the game out and its hard for you to otk, but siding g2/3 makes it much easier. In theory you just have to deal with their face down monsyers, and you can do so by siding, because Shadools would have to draw their fusion spell or a trap to out dark law. Furthermore, Heroes can easily otk out of the blue if they have the right hand or if the facedown monster is not a lizard. Heroes also pressure shadolls because shadolls are a reactive deck and is usually quite slow. Having emptiness + dark law out is very hard for shadoll to deal with.

These 2 are probably the most relevant decks in the OCG meta. Anything else like yang zing, dragon rulers, are probably irrelevant. Infernity is a scary deck, but after playtesting it, deck is prone to monster hands but having first turn dark law makes it really hard for infernity to get going.

So, what cards should be in a hero list?

Here is an example of a core:

1 Airman
X Bubbleman
X Shadow Mist
2 Summon Priest
X Alius

X Miracle Fusion
X Mask Charge
3 Mask Change
1 ROTA
1 Foolish Burial
X Emergency Call
X Hero Alive
1 Reborn
1 Storm

3 COTH
X Traps to deal with the format- Emptiness is probably the most important card in the current meta.

Other cards to consider also include:
E Hero Voltic
HC Halberd Challenger
Maxx C
Super Poly
Form Change
Mask Change 2

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Various versions of heroes:

1) Pure E Heroes (sample of the deck core is given up there)- This list focuses on the mask change + hero focus of the deck. It is generally solid, but can lack monster power.

2) Destiny Heroes- Clarence's list is a very good example, and some decklists mixed with some dhero cards have appeared on Japanese sites. Easy access to key beetle and faster than the pure hero build. Focuses less on the mask change aspect and more on the rank 4 plays.

3) Star seraph heroes- Probably the most popular version of heroes in Japan. Very explosive if you draw the right cards. However, it has consistency issues. Call me a sceptic, but I do not believe this is the right way to play Hero ATM. The reason tellaknight star seraph is good is because tella is a separate reliable engine to have even with dead star seraph cards in hand. Heroes however are not, because the only cards you wanna play are mist, stratos and perhaps 1 bubbleman, along with monk and the star seraph engines. Shadoll star seraph is also alright because you can just stall out with the shadolls or utilize the fusion spell to get rid of dead thrones.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Overall thought on heroes:

It is fun and very consistent. But it lacks really strong power plays like what the star seraph engine can do, or soul charge. This makes it slightly weaker because it relies on a decent setup backed up by vanity emptiness. However, the best decks this format are ones that utilize the star seraph-soul charge engine. They usually end up with 1-2 dead in hand cards (usually a throne or a soul charge early game) if their seraph engine doesnt get going. This makes it slightly less explosive. Heroes could capitalize on that and put pressure early.

Pure Heroes' main downfall is that it cannot make use of soul charge.

However, that seems like a risky strategy to take going into a tournament. They could be tier 1.5 ish but will not really hit tier 1. Having consistency is one thing but also being blown out by decks that draw really well is also another factor to consider. The strongest power play of Tellaknight > strongest power play of Heroes, and the same can be said for the average play for both decks. Until Soul charge is limited, Heroes will never be the best deck.
Yugioh blogging has been dead for quite a while. I've decided to come back to posting a little bit for the fun of it. It will serve like a personal diary, to record what i've come across/ seen/ think of cards/ comboes/ decks/ formats etc.

So, I think i should let you all know what's been up for the last few months in my yugioh life.

First of all, I haven't been playing much Yugioh, besides attending a regionals and nationals, which i will go into detail later in the post. I have played 1 local for the fun of it just so that me and my friends could go to pool after.

So, here goes:

Regional:

I played dragon ruler at this regional. It was just a few days after Alex Juneja nearly topped some american regional with dragon ruler. The list was really hyped, and I was fortunate to be in contact with Chris Welch and Josh Graham as they built the deck. Similar to a list i was tested at the beginning of the format (i ran silver's cry back then in mine), I thought it was interesting to bring it to a regional and see how I could pilot the deck. I came 5-2, losing 1 game to hieretics, which OTK-ed me in game 1, and in game 3 i bricked with 2 blue eyes in hand. This was before Dragons of Legends, so the deck wasn't as good (Its still horrible now), and losing the second match to bujin where i just bricked and game 3 my opponent topdecked Honest for the win. I came 9th, narrowly missing out on the top, as my tiebreaks were pretty good (I beat 1 or 2 people in the top 8, and my other loss was also in the top 8)

Nationals:

Fast forward to nationals, as i have been testing the deck for ages. I was back and forth on alot of cards, especially with the bandit vs trooper issue. Chris convinced me to play Trooper, which sounded great as 2 nights before, I played Trooper vs the mirror and completely savaged my opponents during playtesting. I was completely sold on troopers, and since it was just a week after Hoban won an ARG with dragons, I was pretty sure my nationals meta would be full dragons as the deck wasnt expensive and relatively easy to pick up.

The night before in Brisbane, I playtested, and was extremely satisfied with my list, except i wanted to find 2 metaions to sidedeck, which i eventually found the next morning.

So, here's a short recap of my games:

R 1) Firefist- win. It was a fast win. i saw dragon shrine game 1 and had a playable hand, and game 2 i sided in hands and skill drain to win.

R 2) Zombie Soul charge.dek- He summoned dark grepher and sent mezuki and I was so glad and was like yes a bye, I sent trooper into it, and set a wing blast. In my turn he completely savaged me as he wombo-combo zombie master and friends and made a field of Infernity doom dragon, Beelze and something else, and I used PWWB on the beelze as he was setting his backrow to prevent doom from negating. I was sure I would survive and be able to mount a comeback next turn but he dropped Dark Arm and crushed me.

Game 2 I managed to win, but it took me a long time as dragons were grindy. I managed to attack for game as time was called. It was unfortunate but i was 1-0-1 at this point.

Reminescing here, I made a mistake at one point. I let him take back a play in G1 which might have caused him to win. However, he was the nicest guy I have ever met in a YGO tournament, and we had a very very good chat, and I thought he was a nigga (i've a soft spot for niggas they dope as hell and really cool people to talk to, although Bodan told me he was actually maori after LOL). The whole day, if we met, and even on the next day, he would greet me and chat, and was just a nice person all around. I felt bad, and let him take back the play.

R 3) Mermaids- I drew playable but abit slow, but he completely otk me next turn with tidal, megalo and lots of other shit. I win the next game, and in game 3 i bricked so hard I could build a house. So, I took my first loss for the day, and was 1-1-1

R4) Geargia- My opponent was some weird ginger kid who was horrible at the game. G1 he comboed and my only trap i drew to stop him he had wiretap for it. I lost in 2 turns as my hand was slow and he had geargiagear, armour, wiretap, and accel in hand. Nice hand.

Game 2 he started his plays and I had PWWB to deal with his GGX but i wasnt sure if I should PWWB it as he had a lvl 3 in grave (the one that specials another lvl 4 by tributing itself). I scanned the guy overall and decided he probably didnt know GGX had another eff to revive and just went for it. Lo, and behold, he didnt know ! I drew my combo pieces eventually and it was a long hard grind and I managed to win. However, at one point he read GGX and asked if he could special summon off it (I destroyed it in battle but had proceeded to my MP2). I said hell no LOL you passed priority long ago. As I was attacking for game, the game went to a draw as time was called. We wanted to play game 3 in time with 5 rounds but just my luck, as a judge walked by behind us, looked at the game and (with people watching it), we could not lie and just signed the slip. I was 1-2-1 and had almost given up hope at this point.

R5- Constella - I savaged him game 1, and game 2 I savaged him too. He had soul charge and electric virus my star eater (???) and swung for game. I reminded him about soul charge and he scooped. 2-2-1

R6- Mermaids- I win pretty fast as I saw dragon shrine etc. 3-2-1

R7- Hands deck- It was interesting vs-ing a hands deck before HAT became popular. I win g1 with ease with stardust, and game 2 i sided in my hands and destroyed him in the mirror LOL. 4-2-1

R8- At this point I had climbed back up pretty high, and if i won the last round I had a chance of topping (we found out later that this was not true , as my opponent ended up only in 22nd place). I was seated next to Jono Ritzau and we chatted and I watched him get savaged in the Infenrity mirror while he kept showing me his hands. I was vsing mermail, and my opponent was a bit of a douche, and it was funny how he kept trying to talk to Jono but kept getting ignored (SMH fanboy). Game 1 he combo-ed off and had the warning for my play (I opened really bad and could not get anything going till about turn 3).

Here's the interesting part as Game 2 approached and I get random deckchecked. They came back telling me I had a game loss because I used the duelist kingdom cards as a token. This was literally just unreal as you guys should know that the duelist kingdom cards are the tokens included in the Japanese pegasus starter deck. I ended up in a long debate at the event as several people watched. I told them ,:

1) on a balance of probabalities, it was reasonable to infer that my intention was to clearly use those cards as tokens, and they could not be included in my deck so obviously I had 0 ways to cheat with it.

2) People like Hoban and americans use it all the time, and it was fine.

3) I had asked a judge before the event and showed him my token list (included my Malaysian IC and driving license and several other membership cards) and he said it was fine.

It was beyond absurd and I was so pissed off that I had gotten the game loss. Their reason was that below, on the left hand corner, there was a japanese clause stating this card cant be used in a duel. Well, no shit sherlock, its a fucking token not a card to be played in the maindeck. I smoked up, and went to dinner with friends.

So i ended up 4-2-2 losing 1 to judge OTK, 1 to bricking, and drew 2 games. It was clear my deck choice for the event was wrong as dragons clearly sucked and I had completely forgot about the time factor. I also made a wrong meta call thinking everyone would be running dragons and cut bandit and skill drain out of my maindeck.

I will not be attending Oceanics this year because I am not spending 900$ on return flights to play in a terrible format where lightlord is probably the best deck. Quoting one of my friends, this format is just picking the deck you hate the least. Most of my Aussie friends (progressive team) arent even using the same decks, mainly because there is no clear cut best deck and everyone is just using what they're most comfy with.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, overall, i decided to take a break from Yugioh TCG as it was pretty bad experience during nationals. The metagame right now is mostly sylvians/ lightlord and geargia, and basically anything has a chance to win. The game is very very linear, as the comboes and plays are mostly fairly obvious and there are no lines of thoughts/ and is impossible to plan multiple turns ahead.

Recently I had started to look at the OCG again when Heroes got released, and started testing and playing. I tested a little bit of tella knight and shadolls but stopped, and decided to go full throttle after heroes became available on DNET. The last time I played a proper game of OCG was with dragon rulers around. Naturally, after a few games with some friends, I started getting savaged badly because my thinking had become too linear playing TCG. I soon got used to it again, and am now getting better and more used to OCG. I am learning to play Hero like i used to, and playing control / tempo based decks again, and not just dragon ruler/ combo decks.

The OCG overall is much better. There are times you still get outdrawn but its a card game for God's sake these things happen, but you are in a much better position to control your fate. There are times where your opponent can still outdraw you but lose if they waste their cards and play unoptimally, while you draw your combo cards later in the game.

The game over in Asia is much more complicated and more skilled due to the abundance of options. Hoban once mentioned that a game with a high power creep isnt neccessarily bad, as dragon format was skillful because of the availability of resources and how you had to manage them in different ways.

I will have a post up in the next few days about Heroes in the OCG in general, and how competitive it can be and whether it can survive in the metagame.

Also if you have not known, I have set up a multi FB account for YGO (ting tong which you can freely add as I shall accept every YGO player friend request) . Take heed that its an account for me to go spazzy and at this point, its probably the 2nd most annoying FB acc, after Cordero Vexacus Spencer.

This is what i would want done to the format:

Banned:
Royal Tribute

Limited:
E- Hero Stratos
E- Hero Bubbleman
Verz Ophion
Rekindling
Fire Formation Tenki
Dragon Ravine
Mystical Space Typhoon
Kaiser Colosseum
Skill Drain
Abyssphere
Reckless Greed
Royal Decree
Solemn Judgment

Semi-limited:
Thunder King Raiou
Gorz
Judgment Dragon
Book of Moon
Bottomless Trap Hole
Compulsory Evacuation Device
Torrential Tribute

So, my explanations for the list:

Royal tribute- spooky card which auto wins hanttttt

E-Hero Stratos- Should have never have been banned in the first place, IDK what they were thinking

E-Hero Bubbleman- with airman limited, this card can be at 1 just for the option and the luls.

Verz Ophion- Annoying floodgate which shouldnt exist. I can see Konami keeping it around for artifacts so..

Rekindling- another crazy boogy card, I like how Konami TCG is banning boogy cards, and leaving us with a playable game.

Fire Formation Tenki- card should never have been at 3, its at 2 in ocg.

Dragon Ravine- Personal wishlist to have more dragonss

Mystical Space Typhoon- With all the floodgates gone, and playable traps backed up to 2 in this list, it just makes sense that MST doesnt need to exist at 3 anymore. MST can be considered a floodgate in some sense since alot of plays revolve around spells/traps, for example dragon ravine, tenki, abyssphere etc.

Kaiser Colosseum- annoying floodgate which need not exist

Skill Drain- ^

Abyssphere- Card that makes mermails super strong. Hitting tues will totally kill off the deck. Sphere is the card which generates alot of advantage which ep sphere into pike into gunde and bringing back linde again. Basically a deck thinner, attack protection and fills their grave which fuels their play.

Reckless Greed- Drawing multiples is very strong in TCG with the power creep being low. In fact, resolving reckless once is an auto win cz its hard for your opponent to keep up with the advantage generated. In a deck like mermails, you churn out advantage and the draw phase doesnt matter. At the end of the 2 turns you usually find yourself having the same number of cards as opponent/ or more, and with a stronger board.

Royal Decree- ^

Solemn Judgment- OK to see at 1. Its not an annoying floodgate or a boogey power card and adds more variety in the game.

Semi-limited:

Thunder King Raiou- With more traps, this can exist at 2.

Judgment Dragon- Powerful card. To 1 would kill Lightlords definitely, and at 3 seems too many, 2 seems to be the optimal number.

Gorz- not doing much actually, the formats for Gorz has totally passed us by :(

Book of Moon
Bottomless Trap Hole
Compulsory Evacuation Device
Torrential Tribute

^ Im gonna sum all of these in 1 post since they're effectively the same thing. I think we have all learnt that a format with Solemn warning as your best trap, and having to main 3 fiendish chains in everything was horrible.

Thats all for this post. As i've advocated, more power traps in the format is healthy, and less floodgates/ less boogey cards is the way the game should be heading. The power creep exists, we should get over it, and just adapt to it, and enjoy the game as it is by eliminating as much of the luck factor and the floodgates which stop us from playing the game.mike9944http://www.blogger.com/profile/14655647418055737434noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-78316171109312306.post-30622674467116179602014-02-20T08:49:00.000-08:002014-02-20T08:52:19.373-08:00CardSharpProSo this short article has been long overdue. Was supposed to write it last weekend, but after having to pack and prepare for my flight back to Perth on Monday, i arrived in Perth tired and was busy for the last few nights.

Usually, i would be quite neutral on reviews like this, because Michael Bonacini (DeathAspect) would usually review/write/ comment on topics like this such as Occupy Ygo or the Kristopher Perovic article.

This topic has garnered quite alot of attention lately on the internet among the Yugioh community, especially on DGz.

Alot of people are saying stuff like "its not worth it", "its not worth the money etc", and TBH, i don't actually know if its worth the $.

Josh has showed me a small part of the article he wrote and TBH its pretty good just like Hoban's writing and definitely surpasses mine and any of the other bloggers'.

Like the content is definitely pretty good, and it can definitely help you become better.

However the expensive cost could be due to the fact that he has to pay others who have helped him promote the video/package (i.e: yugitubers) and to pay for the domain of his website.

I am not completely clear on what the package comprises of besides what the ORG has posted on which is 3 videos and 1 article. There have been talks on expanding onto FB and creating groups where good players help the players who purchased this. IMO, that's a good idea, because a fastway to get good at YGO is to have the best help you out.

The ORG review (particularly Earl's part) was quite harsh. I honestly dont think its that bad, and alot of times, once you watch the videos, after understanding what was said, you tend to think "oh i know that" when you actually didn't, and just realized it after watching. So, i would give Josh the benefit of a doubt. (Not calling earl out on anything).

Its up to you if you think 97$ is a good investment. Personally i would never spend that much $ on YGO advice considering most of it is free from blogs/ youtube/ forums/ and just having good networking skills. Spending 97$ to get into the circle seems to be taking a shortcut, which is not neccessarily a bad thing.

My advice is to get a group of friends maybe 10+ or so chip in to buy the product and see how good it actually is, as it seems like the most reasonable option.

This short article is probably very redundant but its just me telling you guys that its not as bad as it seems. Josh Grahams past, and his intentions for the product (whether it is to help/ or to make $) should not be a concern before buying this product. If i wanna get better, i dont care about petty stuff like that, as people are making a fuss over the wrong issue.

So, if you've kept up competitively with the TCG for the past few formats, you will know about the theory of the Upstart Goblin article. To keep it short, it was lately popularised by an American player named Patrick Hoban whose theory was running 37 is better than 40 in the TCG because you see your core /combo cards more. Hoban is one of the best players in America and is also one of the best theorists whereby his explanations on cards, theories are very good. One of them was the theory on the skill curve, where skill is highest at the beginning of the format, and decreases exponentially as the format progresses. Although it has been very widely received in America especially, it has never showed much influence on the European meta or even anywhere in the OCG. Granted this is because OCG has a different meta with much better power cards and more powerful strategies to consider, I have decided to gather the thoughts of various players from Asia and Europe.

I chose 2 players from each respective region : Europe, Malaysia, Philippines and Singapore.

I handpicked the players based on a couple of factors which are:

1) Accessibility. You wont see me interviewing HK or Taiwanese players because i cant really speak chinese, neither can i write in chinese, or even get in contact with them.

2) Number of tops/ relevance in the respective countries. Basically i will interview the best players who have made an impact over the past few years. To be 100% results oriented is wrong, but tops are a decent way to measure how relevant/ good a player is, without much bias. Hoban was always shunned but after he started his winning spree, everyone started accepting his theories.

3) How well the player knows the TCG meta. For example, some of the players in X country may be good, but IMO they may not keep up with the TCG as much. So, to avoid outliers, i decided to make sure that most of the players i interviewed have some background knowledge about the TCG.

PS: dont be offended if i didnt interview you ! I have only 2 players which is very few, so that the article isnt too long. Also, i may not be as close to you or even know you so. Also do note player preference exists in the OCG and is a widely accepted concept. So, do not be alarmed to see people mentioning on player preference.

So, basically, i asked every candidate what they thought about the upstart theory based on the TCG format, and whether they think running 37 cards is optimal/ and worth cutting other cards/techs out for the chance to draw more combo pieces. Also, i asked them to comment based on different decks in TCG such as otk-combo-grind deck like HRuler, straight otk decks like karakuri, and grind-combo decks like firefist.

Also, there's a written article here talking about the math of Upstart Goblin:

http://duellikeanidol.wordpress.com/2011/01/06/the-difference-of-upstart-goblin-in-six-samurai/

IDK if its accurate or not or the correct math can be found in some DuelistGroundz thread.

Here's what they have to say:

Malaysia:

C1: Shahmir Roshidi- Shahmir has been incredibly consistent last year and have finished in single digit tops in every single tournament in Malaysia that he has gone to, meaning a 100% top ratio. To top it all, he occasionally keeps up with the TCG , and he knows his stuff so what better candidate !

(Take note some of these interviews were conducted on whatsapp, and FB messenger)

" It depends on the type of decks that use it. The best deck to use Upstart will be a combo deck, if not, i don't recommend running it. They need to get to their pieces faster. It also depends on what decks you view as combo decks, and how you wanna play those decks. Eg: TCG plays FF/ Mermail as combo decks but OCG doesnt. In DRuler Hieratic, i think Upstart isnt bad as the lp cost is negligible since the deck is more grindy and doesn't attempt to otk as often. I honestly dont get why players use upstart in decks like Windups and Firefists. There seem to be better choices. It depends on the decktype and the player's preference. All it does is make your deck 37 cards."

C2: Zack Teoh: Zack has been the most consistent player last year winning 2 whole events and topping every single sanctioned Malaysian event. I do not know how much he keeps up with the TCG but i decided to give him a brief overview of it beforehand so he has a clearer image. Here's what he has to say:

" My opinion on Upstart is that Upstart is good , but not all decks have the space/chance to play Upstart. Based on the TCG, i think Upstart should be run because the game play is slower so you need to access your cards more and the 1k is negligible unlike in OCG."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Phillipines:

C3: Irwin Arogo: Irwin is the best player in the Phillipines now winning nationals back to back, winning Asia Plus, and winning every single other card game tourney like VG (he's represented Phil in multiple events), and has been successful in other games such as MTG.

" I think Upstart should be used in decks that only need to draw their key cards early, or benefits from spell card activations such as Prophecy in the previous formats. I don't like it because its like giving your opponent 1000 lp extra for no reason at all. For the part about cutting the deck to 37 to mitigate bad draws and drawing unnecessary cards by running less cards, i think that while deckbuilding, the player will not include cards that are situational or useless for their deck strategy. I don't think it improves consistency as much because its just a 1:1 spell, and it doesnt make too much of an impact. Its far different from Pot of Duality which can fix your draws and give you 2 extra options to choose from."

C4: Karlo Bonillo: Karlo is one of my closest Asian buddies and he has in depth knowledge about the game. He has several accomplishments in the past winning 1 or 2 events and topping at least 8-10 others, before he started slowing down and committing less to the game recently. He also has been keeping up with the TCG so he seemed like a suitable candidate. To Edsel and Jun (Elvis Agoto) i wish i could interview you guys too but i only could interview 2, and to Jun, i don't know you that well personally and I didnt know how much you kept up with TCG, and as for Edsel, i think you're busy with UNI and pilot training so yea.

" I prefer to play other useful cards compare to Upstart Goblin. IMO, cutting Upstart means you will reduce space on cards which could be helpful for your matchups. I value card space alot. 40 is the minimum for me and i wish to put other cards in my deck. I think Upstart is player preference, as it depends on what the player values more. Some players value consistency, but i value utility and having more options rather than just having my combo pieces. Since Hoban like it and it works for him well, then good for him. But for me its not worth the space"

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Europe:

C5: Alpay Engin: Alpay has shown consistency over large events in the past formats, and has shown exceptional performance in the last format. The 3 big players last format was Alpay, Joshua, and Michel (with Michel out of the competitive scene with an unreasonable ban #FreeGruner) .

PS: Alpay didn't talk much with me because he was driviung to school at the time of interview and he only said a few words. Furthermore, it was pretty obviuous his first language is not English so he may keep the interview short. Also, dont really know him very well personally.

" Yes , i think Upstart is quite good. I personally run it in Firefists. You need it to get to Tenki and resolve the 1st turn spirit play ASAP. Sorry, i'm driving to school now, hard life. Will I see you at Berlin?"

C6: Joshua Schmidt: Joshua needs no introduction along with Alpay. He topped every YCS in the past format, and finished top4 at worlds 2 years ago.

" Alright. i'm not a big fan of playing Upstart in every deck, playing 37 sure is nice, but its not as if its for free. I consider LP as a resource too and playing a game against more LP could lead to you losing in the long run due to having to spend more resources. Generally, i like it only in decks that need it like Geargia to get to their armour asap without much ways to accelerate. Or decks like heiratics which dont have many ways to get to their key cards aside from Upstart. Most of the time, I would rather just pick 3 other cards which can be good in various situations, and i think that is better most of the time as well."

C7: Wesley Seek: Wesley aka Lambyseries is a teammate and close friend and has shown himself to be one of the best players in Singapore (whether you like it or not) by being consistent in the last few events. Despite having a few months hiatus from the game due to army commitments, Wesley returned to competiive play and went top 4 at Singapore Open ; an impressive feat for someone who has taken a long break from the game for almost 4 months. He has always been like the Asian Hoban, having interesting and strange theories which he believed strongly in, some of them which can cause controversial discussions because it's different from the norm (such as maindecking red eyes, reborn in every single variant of druler, and siding Dprison VS Hanzo Hieratic in the 2012 March format), and some which are so accurately explained and thought of, you would just apply it straight away.

Here's what he has to say: (and it might be the best response out of the entire 8 players. He also wrote a fking thesis , and it took me a lot of time to type out what he had to say, so i hope you guys enjoy the response)

"In no way is Upstart a staple in everydeck because not every deck has the same purpose. By purpose, i mean the way it functions, its win condition, its playstyle etc. Its hardly a negative to thin the deck but not every deck should run it, why?

Firstly, is purpose: If we use otk as an example, you clearly wanna put 8k dmg on board ASAP with as much ease as possible. Considering the 1k gain, can u consistently get an extra 1k-3k dmg in with that extra thinning?

What are you intending to draw that justifies you drifting slightly further from your purpose to warrant running Upstart? With that said, i dont think Hieratics should be running Upstart. For Druler in OCG now, i think its viable because thinning for another colour, or obtaining the Dragon shrine is very crucial as your win condition and beginning of your resource pool resolves around utilizing your edrags and that is only obtainable when you have access to all of your colours ASAP.

So onto more popular decks like FF. Can you realistically otk with FF not consistently, or even hardly? Whats your win condition? To me, it is resolving Bear, getting those hits in, putting the pressure on opponent and generating advantage. So, yes FF should play Upstart since you wanna see bears, tenkis, tensus etc to pressure the opponent.

Upstart in geargiakarakuri? Well you dont wanna draw your karakuri tuner engine or the geargianos and MK2 early to fuel geargiagear. Sure drawing arsenal/armour t1 is important, but weighing the random 1 more draw to something precise like Duality, I would rather go with Duality because in this case, simply because theres the option of not choosing something that shouldn't be drawn early or not drawn at all.

Tldr; i believe Upstart shouldn't be played in outright OTK decks. It should be played in decks that can combo off or start winning with the early access to 1 or 2 cards (edrags, bear, nebradisk in OOparts, medraut, leopard, tenki, kaust + pollux, castor + verz, Yamato, Inzektor Damsel etc)

To conclude, dont run a card because someone runs it , run it because it makes sense. If someone runs it and it makes sense to you, then run it. Learn to doubt, and learn to question and not to follow blindly, know why things are done for certain reasons, then make the best decisions."

Last but not least we have :

C8) Anders Koh (DSummon)- Fresh off his win from YCS Sydney, i could not think of anyone else better to interview better! DS piloted an otk version of Karakuri to win the event. Karakuri, known as a combo deck should theoretically run Upstart.... right? Or maybe not? See what he has to say:

" Technically, the math involving Upstart makes sense. However it still depends on the deck build and what is is built to do. If its a deck like darkworld, Upstart is viable cos you need to see key cards and its meant to grind out for game with advantage. In my deck, i think upstart isnt viable since I need to deal damage quick and otk.

The main point i didn't run Upstart was because the deck was designed to end the game ASAP before your opponent starts to farm and make a comeback. (He attributes it to the slow pace format in TCG).
In a typical deck like Firefist which sorts of grind but doesnt really otk, it depends, but its all up to player's preference and build.

Personally, i think if you have to cut stuff for space in your maindeck, it makes no sense to cut on real traps or techs just to try to build consistency through your draws. Plus anyway, YGO is about lifepoints, and makes no sense to give your opponent free LPs just to obtain a little bit of consistency.

Also, there are cards like Exciton Knight which exist. If all you do is obtain consistency, and you have less answer to opponent's plays, doesn't make sense if your opponent can just clear your board and gain a massive lead just through an explosive play. Thats about all the thoughts in my head for now"

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Like i mentioned in the previous post, blogging and articles are almost a dead trade because almost everyone knows about the theory etc and the important part of YGO is applying it in your games, and players should look to Youtube duel wideos as the way to go to learn YGO, observe plays and techs etc.

But i decided to make this post because it was interesting to see what people think about a certain theory. Hopefully you enjoyed the post.

As of now, i would like to make a conclusion and give my opinions, but its late and i wanna head to bed, but let me know what you think in the comments below ~

What do i think of it?

Awesome tbh, the list keeps dragons alive and doesnt hit ravine, something which was a right move, and very very big mistake on Konami TCG's part, because it destroyed the playability of decks like dragunity.

TBH, the banlist was very good because it introduced more options and more interesting things into the game compared with how stale the TCG format is. Cards like Cyber Stein prove to be extremely interesting, because playing a high risk high reward card seems to add a new element into the game. Being tutorable through Gear Gigant X, we can easily see this card appear in gadget decks, and even karakuri geargia decks.

So, lets debunk the banlist !

For Return to be banned was long overdue , and the represents the only thing stealing dragon ruler mirrors.
You'll lose to blowout cards less. IMO dragon ruler mirrors will be even more skillful as less luck elements are removed.

Verz Ophion- this is good on Konamis part. I have always called on Ophion being unhealthy for the game and 1 of the best floodgate cards and it was something the TCG should have done. GJ OCG.

Ehero Bubbleman- Similar to Patrick Hoban's article he mentioned how bubbleman made eheros degenerate with otks, loops, etc. Konami japan identified this problem, and limited it, instead of touching airman. Also precaution for next format, so less people make 1st turn shock ruler and lose. Another very good call, which Konami TCG should learn from.

Cyber Stein- Now this is interesting and i have no idea how this will affect the meta. IMO, it adds a new element to the game and it definitely should return. Its gonna be very hard to get otk-ed with 3 gorz, swordsman of revealing light and rainbow kuribiohs running around. However, isit a degenerate card which will win you the game automatically? No it isnt. 5000 lifepoints isnt cheap, and dealing 3000 lifepoints damage has been so fking easy ever since old formats like GB formats, so dealing 3k in 1 turn nowadays after the power creep is a joke.

atlantean dragoons- way overdue. sphere limited, tues limited. RIP mermail. However it will still be tier 2 ish due to 3 diva, 2 tidal.

7 Star sword- Now sword was arguably one of the best cards in druler aside from return and ravine. Sword puts you ahead of the mirror by resolving 1, and like mentioned above, limiting sword to 1, greatly reduces the luck element of the mirror match- which is to open sword and dig deeper in your deck while your opponent is only stuck at his 1st 6 cards. I've won so many more games resolving sword in mirrors compared to blowing my opponent out with return.

Gold sarc- To greatly reduce the consistency of dragons. Good call.

Honest- Now this move is just to give lightlords more power. Bujins get a slight bump but not as much of a difference. Honestly (pun), the difference between 1 extra honest (4~5) is not so much of a difference since they have 3 searchable honests anyway. It definitely gives Lightlord a big boost, and a larger win condition. IMO a very dangerous move. Very sacky. This might be the worst decision they made in this list, but is certainly not an abomination.

Zombie Carrier- For zombies i guess. Konamis plan to increase the power creep and then unlimit old cards which are severely weakened by the power creep is working. Notice cards coming off the banlist like mezuki etc.

Lonefire blossom- shinra boost i guess. As mentioned with zombie carrier above, they are returning old cards. I dont think Plants will be as strong as they used to be. I wont be surprised if they decided to kill off dragons, and return glow up bulb in the future.

4 dragon rulers- good call. Dragons will still be viable, severely weakened and need to look for other alternatives.

Other stuff: Not very relevant. As i mentioned 2 formats ago in my banlist discussion that Gorz to 2 would not make any impact, many people called me crazy, but now it is going to 3, and will not make much impact either :) except maybe in lightlords but there are so many better alternatives like swordsmen of revealing light and rainbow kuribou.

Overall, this banlist is quite good and the game will be quite healthy until madolche anjelly and artifacts come out. The top decks are easily, in no particular order:

1) dragons

2) Bujin- Bujin Asuka makes a big difference and people in TCG are dumb to hype over bujin hare and peacock, when bujin asuka is so much better adding a searchable kagetokage into their deck.

3) Chronomaly- One of the best toolbox decks in the game right now. The aeroplane is actually fking dangerous shit.

4) Heraldics- Tutoring monster reborns and miracle fusions is cool, and a r4 toolbox which has extremely overpowered spell cards but underwhelming monster cards make the archetype balanced but just good enough to be competitive.

5) Madolches- This deck seems extremely imbalanced with a +5 combo but its actually not. The deck is nothing like windups because the +5 combo doesnt work turn 1 if your opponent has no field, and the deck is easily beaten if you MST their chateau and ticket. Also, despite having 6airman in the deck, 3 lonefire, and other stuffs, deck remains weak because the monsters are small and have a hard time overcoming big monsters early game. But it will remain good undoudbtly. The speed variant with TG engine is definitely not the way to go and a more stable control based approach seems to be the better build.

6) Last but not least is Firefist a deck which was untouched by the banlist. Firefist remains a very strong option and i will not be surprised to see it in the top tables once again

7) Geargia Karakuri. Lets face it. The Auger card is nuts. This deck will remain under the radar and quite unpopular IMO because for some reason people dont like the idea of playing machines and probably never will, unless its like cyber dragon toolbox but fuck that.

8) Lightlord- good deck with 3 judgment dragons. The skill in the deck comes from perfecting the deck and making it as consistent as possible. Has extremely powerful plays but will lose to itself and floodgate cards like macro, Light mirror etc. Lightlord assailant riden is extremely powerful on its own.

Anything else seems Tier 2 ish or just weird or i may not have taken it into consisderation. Despite everything else, the banlist paves the way for more decks to be competitive. The 8 mentioned here may not all be tier 1, but will horde the top part of the tier list.

All in all, i think the OCG list seems very good and the TCG seem to have taken the game in the wrong way. Any TCG Konami staff reading this article should think twice about it. The ones who have control of the game is Konami Japan as they release all the cards in the upcoming sets etc. They will increase the pwoer creep however they want and to curb the power creep is the wrong way to go. The sets and the cards designed are designed to suit the OCG meta and not the TCG's which is extremely underwhelming.

Let me bring up a few examples:

1) Why did they ban ravine ? Because dragunity would be good if it was allowed to remain at 3 in the current format and may be one of the best decks due to its consistency etc. But dragunity is not even strong in OCG. Why? because the formats are so different.

Patrick Hoban mentioned that power creep is not necessarily bad which i agree with. The dragon formats have shown to be extremely skill reliant. Konami Japan is currently trying to create a more "fair" format despite all the power cards. its true decks are more imbal nowdays, but if all decks have equal power? Then it would not be too much of a problem.

Why dragons would be a disaster if they were left in TCG for another format? Because the format is too slow and it will just eat every other deck up. In OCG, they will still be very good this format but they will also be alot fair-er and easier to deal with because cards like Bottomless Trap hole and Compuls are left in multiples.

Banning cards like Heavy storm and limiting all good traps is a terrible way to go. It makes strong openings like Firefist opening or spellbook opening with 5 backrow extremely overpowered. Its true that with more strong traps around, it solidifies the openings in OCG, ie: a strong power play backed up by BTH and compuls very good, but one must also consider that with the power creep in OCG, its also easier to deal with those backrows. Having Heavy storm is also good because people will only set 1-2 anyway. 2 card probably because they generated a plus 1 in opening turn, and they can survive a heavy storm.

Plus with good backrows around, it makes games more exciting and less about vomiting your field out. IMO, the notion of letting your opponent play Yugioh by limiting the floodgate cards like Skill Drain, Ophion, etc is the way to go. Not limiting all the traps, solemn judgment and heavy storm. Because those cards are part of the game as much as other cards are.

Lets look at TCG. With lesser backrows, how are tier 2 decks even having the chance to compete? Lets say INzektor sets a hornet or summons a Armagedon Knight with shitty backrow, how are they gonna deal with Firefist etc? The approach that Konami TCG has taken is obviously wrong.

When the new cards come out, people will scream broken? Why? Because the power creep in TCG has been severely reduced, and introducing cards of a higher power level suited for OCG meta which is of a higher power level will make things worse. In the end, Konami TCG will just limit everything. As Allen Pennington has predicted, if they continue this stance, there are gonna be more cards on the limited list than the banlist itself.

How is Hoban topping with hieratics in TCG? Is it because he is the best player? No. It is because the power creep has lessened so much that a deck like Hieratic can suddenly win/top events in TCG. Is this a good thing? Yes, and no. But its another illustration of how a deck which is tier 2-3 in OCG suddenly becoming a force to be reckoned with in TCG.

To prove another point, i urge TCG players to go play OCG for a few games. You will notice you suddenly have so much more decisions to make, so much more moves to take into account compared with TCG. Every time i finish testing OCG with my team, and if i proceed to test TCG after with TCG friends, the game suddenly seems so much easier. If you dont believe it, try it out for yourself. If the Worlds format is in favour of OCG and follows their format, i guarantee TCG players will all scrub out again. And why? Because Konami TCG decided to "fix the game".

Thats all for today. I am extremely envious of the OCG banlist :)

I also wrote about a store hosting tourney series in Singapore and how they should record feature matches.

The next day baha told me that the store actually does feature matches and has a YouTube channel where they post the recordings.

Check out the channel Cardz royale on YouTube. I would link it but I'm on my iPad now.

Go subscribe to it ! Much better to watch those videos than ppl like Cordero or other yugi tubers.
The channel has a very measly number of subscribers so it would be good if you guys supported them.

They may not have updated the latest videos yet and are still a few weeks behind due to editing or being busy , but hey quality over quantity !

That's all for today.mike9944http://www.blogger.com/profile/14655647418055737434noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-78316171109312306.post-66627751440408493142014-01-06T11:02:00.000-08:002014-01-06T11:04:13.871-08:00The death of yugioh bloggingSorry guys but someone has to bring this up sooner or later.

Yugioh blogs are more or less dead.

Why ?

Because everything is concentrated on social media whereby FB or forums like DGz are the popular choices. An extremely underrated option is twitter, where OCG players and Japanese players share techs and decklists. IMO, every player should set up Twitter and follow baha! and many jap players like joker, jspeed, nana, chariot etc.

Furthermore yugioh isn't exactly the most complicated thing in the world so why would people need to read blogs about its strategy?

Most of the things I have noticed myself writing is why card choice A > card choice B or why I did that instead but it's not really relevant because any idiot can test it himself and come to the same conclusion.

The only stuff which I can actually write about is about good decks at the start of an undefined format. Which in this case is irrelevant because the meta will shape after 1 or 2 ycs.

Cool stuff like techs shouldn't be shared, I mean seriously if you have a cool tech which you found which puts you ahead, obviously you won't share right, you'd rather use it to your advantage at a high level tourney.

Ygo now should concentrate on one thing - bringing more coverage and feature matches as well as duel videos . IMO this are the new best ways to help people improve. Joshua Graham's YouTube channel is doing a very good job and I commend him for going in that direction. Having commentary is good too. Granted his duels aren't top quality, but it's a step in the right direction.

Malaysias yugioh community had decided to do some thing similar by recording duels of locals finals at the official store weekly or something like that.

1 of the stores in Singapore which runs a blog called active card series has decided to give mini coverage in the form of pic and matchup charts on fb and blogs. I feel that if they record the videos or even just 1 video feature of the finals for their tournament series (weekly) , that would be extremely beneficial to the entire Ygo community. Singapore has extremely solid and consistent Ygo players, which many are of world standard, and no other country except maybe Japan, could be in a better position to do this. However, it may be too much to ask or be too inconvenient to the tourney organizers, but if they do happen to read this, think about it ! Any Singaporeans reading this, please convey this msg to them :)

That's all for today. I will update the blog from time to time , and have a happy new year !mike9944http://www.blogger.com/profile/14655647418055737434noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-78316171109312306.post-62244954261525500842013-12-31T05:36:00.002-08:002013-12-31T05:36:45.139-08:00TCG new formatSo, in 3 hours (Malaysia singapore time), the new format will be in effect.

After testing these few days, it became adamant that alot of decks would be very very good this format. There will definitely be more than 1 dominant deck at the start of the format, but as it progresses on, i can see more imbal stuff from Konami (such as inzektor, prophecy, dragon ruler) which will ruin our Nationals/ WCQ again. The deck that seems to give the most cancer would probably be Madolche, or Machines (MPB OLion is good ! unless we dont get the fortress stealth xyz :( )

However, everybody has been relooking and retesting decks of old , such as mermail, FF, Hapries which were rendered useless due to dragons last format.

With dragons gone ( for good, almost every variant tested has been a pile of garbage), its safe to say that its gone for good. Even in a blue eyes variant, the deck still has inconsistent hands which wont last a long round regional/YCS.

So, with all the talk, alot of last format's early theory will be in practice once again. Last format, i said that 3 MST is a must, and Veiler will be a necessity. Once again, until the format is defined, i think this will be the case. MST is good vs all decks, and Veiler (unlike Maxx) hits all decks, no matter what.

So, what do i think are the new top decks this format?

The first deck which came into my mnd was spellbooks. Books which were last format's near equal to dragons will definitely become big again. Although fate is limited, the deck has very explosive plays namely temperaance and world. If the deck would ever become good again, it would be a world-temperance abuse deck. Some players in DGZ have realized that and have included cards like Stoic to help improve the chances of seeing temperance. From testing, temperance and world is indeed the deck's best play and the only way spellbook can win is to resolve a world drop. Therefore, to curb books, the best way is to stop temperance/ world.

So what should we do? Fiendish chain comes into mind but after testing, it is not enough. Wisdom is easily used and even Veiler is unreliable because they can chain their own fiendish to your veiler and render it uselesss and resolve tmeperance. Wrath on the other hand, was pretty good, but its steep discard cost may not make it popular among most decks. Its safe to say that once you prevent world/temperance/life/tower (these are the probem cards), then you can win the game.

From testing, one particular deck which many have written off seems to be books worst matchup. the deck is none other than Verz, because of the deck's beatdown feature, it is naturally an enemy for books. The deck's ability to main Mistake or side it also helps quite abit. Lastly, because books have nothing but a temperance play to win, Ophion helps with that! Verz also has very consistent openings which allow me to believe, that if people put enough hard work into the deck, it can be seen at the top tables again.

Thirdly, is a deck which has retained its power plays since last format, while receiving a tiny boost in consistency (tenki). This deck is incredibly good because it has so many explosive plays that it doesnt even seem fair. The deck now reminds me much of Mermails before Tachyon came out, which made it a really really versatile. Think about it, 3 tenki= 3dragoons, 3 wolfbarg= 3 diva. Bear and Dragon and Gorilla all act like built in Atlantreans with Mermail bodies (lvl 4.less than 2000 attack), and the deck just seems so good. Tigerking is one of the most annoying xyzs around, and the deck has access to kugutsuchi, a 2500 beatstick with Maesltroke effect. If i were to play next format, FF would be my choice of deck. The mirror match would be alot like the past mermail mirror. Grinding and conserving cards so that you win the grind game. It is an explosive deck which can easily take on prophecy early game if they start slow, and destroys every other backrow deck around. The deck's worst matchup will be prophecy and nothing else for the meantime.

IMO, these will be the 3 big decks along with some stuff like Geargia Karakuri (probably just as good as the other 3), and alot of other decks like Mermail and Harpies wihich arent as good as the other 3 but will still exist to catch duelists off guard.

Thats all for today, going for countdown with friends have a good time and have a good 2014 every buddy

Prior to the current list, i think it is very good and honestly quite challenging. It has been one of the best formats so far because dragon format was referred to by most players as a teledad format. I've never played in that format before so experiencing it was pretty good. You needed to make good meta calls to top events because the best deck for that format might not be the best deck for that event.

Sure it may get boring to people after a while but i honestly enjoyed it more than a diverse format.

It may not be healthy since the format isnt diverse anymore but i honestly am not sure if i can enjoy sucha a format anymore. Honestly, it doesnt matter because players should just adapt no matter what the format is. We will still continue to play despite what happens.

The current list put dragons ahead other decks but it is honestly quite a diverse one. It is just that all the good players want to play dragons. When a deck is largely represented, it will top. If most good players run it, it will definitely appear in higher numbers in the top cut, which is simple logic.

With that said, here goes my banlist wishlist:

(assuming that we are following konami TCG's ideology of balancing things out)

Banned:
Limiter Removal- konami loves taking away power cards.
6th Sense- ~~~
Return from the different dimension- Main card which makes dragons broke. In many games dragons outpace rogue because they can access return and win.

Restricted to 1:
E hero Airman- i've no idea why this card was banned. It is not a power card at all in this format because of the power creep. Killing off heroes was a terrible idea.

Imperial Iron Wall- One of the floodgate ygo cards. I think it should be limited because its too unfair.

Gozen Match- Another floodgate card.

Skill Drain- Same card which stops ygo. If dragons were to exist, skill drain should not be at 2/3 because they would be too unfair.

Thousand Eyes Restrict- call me crazy but i dont see TER doing much in this meta. It cannot be incorporated into a top tier deck, and is hard to abuse.

Verz Ophion- another floodgate card.

Solemn Judgment- Solemn judgment, IMO, is a very skill based card. It should not have gone.

Sacred Sword of 7 Stars- One of the main reasons why dragons were the best deck, it put you ahead so far. Allowing you to draw 2 plus choose a dragon of your choice of the same element you gave up?

Spellbook of Fate- If dragons were to go, spellbooks would undoubtly be a beast. Fate, to me, has been 1 of the main problem in books. Maybe you should hit batel or secrets, but the deck already bricks to itself too easily. Not thought over properly so feel free to criticize.

Restriced to 2:
Dragunity Dux- Dragunities would be good in this format. However, 1 card lvl8 is never good.

Dragon Ravine- Another problem with dragons. Unlike swords, i think it should stay at 2 for dragunities.

Book of Moon- Something which i think should come back to 2.

Bottomless Trap Hole- killing more dragons is cool ~

Gold Sarcophagus- If ravine and swords are decreased, its only fair sarcophagus comes back.

** Batel** - maybe
**secrets**- maybe
** Evilswarm Kerykion**- Not thought out properly but nerfing verz sounds good.
**Constellar Kerykion**- forgot the name of this constellar bt its the constellar vers of kerkyion. Same reasoning.
*** ROTA***- Not my wishlist but i added it in because i think Konami might release it to 2 for noble knights.

Restrict to 3:
***unsure***

So basically my wishlist is just to slow down dragons, but still make them playable. They have multiple ways to shine still, including shrine, ddr, sarco, felgrand etc. Removing all the crazy power cards in the deck while keeping them playable.

mike9944http://www.blogger.com/profile/14655647418055737434noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-78316171109312306.post-61147339683861562422013-12-04T23:43:00.000-08:002013-12-04T23:43:01.981-08:00Dragon decklist http://i.imgur.com/a29aTM4.png

This will probably be my last dragon decklist for this format since i am pretty sure konami will kill off dragons in some way. Hopefully they let them exist still !

The format has actually been pretty diverse naturally, but everybody and their mothers decided to run dragon ruler thus the reason why the top cuts are filled with druler. TBH if a good player picks up a different deck, they can make it work etc (eg : Sam pedigo, Eaton guo and Sean mnccabe), even if they have to resort to maining 21 flood gate cards.

However i dont blame anyone for wanting to play dragons- its easily the best deck since you can also sack with return and 6th, and put free power cards on the board.

So, to explain some choices-

The monsters are extremely standard. I chose scarecrow over fader because some people are starting to run vanity again. And felgrand isnt realistically good in the TCG.

spells !:

2 ddr- this card is a bi-product of me playing the OCG for a while. It is never dead , opens endlesss possibilities, turns lacklustre hands in t1 of maybe only 2 colors into playable ones, recycles your fuel, and puts pressure on your opponent. Furthermore, i'd like to blow my opponents out when i use ddr after siding out return :D

enemy controller- used to be book of moon but am just testing this. Surprisingly good in mirror as stealing your opponent's afd t1 is too good. Activatring your own ravine then using their afd on your ravine destroys their t1 setup, which is an insanely good setup which can win you the game. Also a 1 card out to pleaides but yeah nvm.

trap stuns- still in the midst of testing. may switch for mst. stun is great with monsters like dragosack where you can summon sack, and opp activates a trap and you chain stun, then blow up 1 of their fds. Clears multiple cards and allows you to push. However unlike mst it is sometimes dead.

sidedeck:

fossil dyna- vanity + ophion out. I wish we had ghosttrick frost :(

e virus- i noticed lately it is getting harder to play around evirus, thus added it in.

dna surgery- books + noble night

tuner scheme- card that was tested out for fun but turned out to be insanely good. If known, opponent will play retardedly to play around it. If set t1, it turns their afd combo against them. If not, you take away some of their resources when they sync a monster, and to deal with the monster they just relinquished to you, they needa expend more resources too. Its harder to play around it then you think because not every situation compels you to make star eater/ colossal/ dragosack

Or i could run debunk XD But debunk has been pretty crappy lately.

Banlist post tomorrow !

First of all everybody knows that trooper is pretty relevant in TCG Druler but some choose not to play it because of the fact that you will mill your spell/trap cards if you have bad luck with it.

Well, this article hopefully changes your mindset on Card trooper's flexibility.

A while ago, i had been testing different ratios of card troopers from 0 to 2 in standard dragon and found that 1 is a pretty good number so that you don't draw too many vs your mirror match which is where its 50-50 most of the time. Generally 2 would be the right number but i found 6th sense to have the same useability of Card Trooper (another reason why i think 6th sense is absolutely staple!)

So, if you look at it from a different POV, you will almost always be summoning card trooper only when you are without colours. If you have a dragon hand, and a trooper. then yes trooper is an added liability but only if your opponent has a nutty hand with fuel + traps ! But not everyday is a sunday so thats the only situation where its bad.

If you have a spell/.trap hand and you summon trooper and mill spell/traps, at first it may seem bad, but you are generally discarding the possible dead draws you have for next few turns and turning it into live dragons from your deck (hopefully!), plus if your hand is full of traps, and you milled more, then its fine because you still have your hand to abuse. You can then proceed to waste their resources so that you can put pressure on them so that they cannot make a comeback.

In the above situation, if your opponent is in a good position, you'll almost be losing anyway. Having trooper at least lets you sift through your decks for plays next turn with the possibility of milling dragons. So, its a card which lets you do something and improve your chances over the upcoming turn.

Worse comes to worse, late game, trooper acts as redox monster reborn fuel when you have no dragons left in your deck (you dont wanna mill your traps and power cards!)

Thus, i think in almost every situation , trooper is never bad in the mirror except when you open colour hand and they open perfect, which was pointed out that your already losing anyways, so why not play a card which increases consistency overall? Its similar to the mindset of playing ryko in junk doppel , whereby even if you mill power cards, and not combo cards (which was an added benefit), you'll still be closer to your combo pieces in your following draws.

Patrick Hoban talks about Upstart Goblin, card trooper is an upstart goblin on roids which generate more and more advantage as long as it stays on the field.

In fact, i have had so many situations where i summoned it and blaster just to put pressure against an opponent's s/t board in the mirror. A card which puts added pressure is almost always good.

Added benefits include using it vs retarded rogue decks or playing the resource game vs your opponent if you know he still sides debunks (sucks in TCG) or if he runs fossil dyno.

Alot of people are terribly bored with the format as of now, so i would advise them to learn OCG mermail mirror because the deck is incredibly fun ! Its a whole different format with whole different card interactions, and for some reason i feel that the OCG and TCG might just merge back together next format. (call it 6th sense)

That's all for today.mike9944http://www.blogger.com/profile/14655647418055737434noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-78316171109312306.post-76327141651814533032013-11-18T01:12:00.001-08:002013-11-18T01:17:12.249-08:00Carl Manigat's Mythic RulerYesterday ARG Worcsdfzdnfsjdfq just finished and i managed to take a look at some of the decklists. Granted most of them were horrible and established my stance on why American YGO shouldn't be taken too seriously at times, 1 particular deck stood out very much to me which was Carl manigat's mythic ruler.

This was his main deck list.

First of all you will notice is that it has absolutely no tempest and meaning you only run 3 dragon rulers.

Secondly is the upstart and reckless engine which bears so much resemblance to Patrick hobans's dragunities.

The idea of this deck is to use those 2 colours to summon a rank 8 usually felgrand, or draggluong or even galaxy eyes comparable to a level 8 that hoban's deck focuses on summoning.

It also runs montage dragon as a searchable level 8 to abuse together with mythic water. Montage dragon is a beast being able to considerably put game on board makes it an incredibly interesting monster. However i think its used just for synergy with trade in and mythic water. Lance + montage is crazy because putting 4k damage is insane since it bypasses scarecrow and fader.

The 2 trade ins represent the consonance engine in regular dragunities.

The merits of the deck is that it doesnt rely heavily on ravine which can be considered an asset since field spell wars wont be a problem for this deck.

I think it is very very interesting and is definitely worth testing out.

Is it good? Probably, he had to be doing something right to make it to the finals or a glorified regionals. However, it may not be good because of consistency issues etc but its definitely worth a try.

The event also showcased fossil dyna pachyphealo's entrance to the druler sidedeck similar to what japan has been doing.

Fossil dyna is very neat with stardust radiance. Backed up with a debunk and a trap stun, its incredibly powerful. However it wont be as effective in TCG compared to OCG where traps arent very prevalent.

Its ability to kill orphion and many other decks is neat too , an has alot of weightage to how versatile it might be.

A few days ago, dgz dragon ruler thread had a very heated discussion about Upstart Goblin in standard dragon rulers TCG.

The idea was that you would run 37 cards thus making it easier for you to get to your key cards.

You would mostly use upstart after you thinned your deck though dragon searches/ravine mills or only when you need to, or when you could deal your opponent some damage to mitigate upstarts costs.

The pros of upstarts are:

1) 37 cards - cool stuff.
2) Easier to get to your key cards
3) Most standard rulers will cut consonance for this (which is probably better)
4) Implied consistency

The cons are:

1) 40 is tight space. Playing upstart cuts you from 3 other cards which could be useful combo cards or relevant traps for mirror.
2) 1000 life points gain sucks balls.
3) Having it in your hand when you wish it was a trap is worse.
4) Using it and drawing another dragon.
5) Much more

So, i was pretty against the card cos it sounds terrible and 1000 lp means its harder to kill your opponent.

But i was very wrong when i started testing some hands. The card did give the deck consistency and you saw sword, colours, maxx c etc more often than you should.

So, with both sides of the theory being equally convincing, the last thing you had to do is test the theory. So, from my deck i cut 3 cards which i found unneeded which are terraforming (to add consistency for ravine. Being at 37 means you will see ravine more), and 1 trap and 1 mst.

I tested a number of games with a friend. I found out my loss rate increased by 30% (from 30% on average from past scores to a whopping 60%) after testing with upstart.

Here are my conclusions:

upstart goblin is definitely not worth maining as the cons outweigh the pros. The reasons are as follows:

1) Holding upstart after you can thin down the deck sounds like it would work. However it doesnt work that way, You need to activate it immediately alot of times and it will just brick. This is not goat control where you can wait for a card to be good. You need cards you can use immediately effectively.

2) The 1000 lp cost matters alot more.

3) The 1000 lp cost after they resolve the ancient fairy combo turn 1 will make it worse. At that point even if you drew into 6 sense it wont necessarily help you. In that position, in 1 of the games, i found that if i had a trap instead of upstart, i would have grinded the game out and probably won.

4) After i took out upstart, and he continued using them, i went up to 12k lp in 1 game and took no damage lol

5) Increasing your trap count will let you see more traps compared to reducing your trap count and reducing deck count. Eg: running 8 defensive cards in a deck of 40 nets you a 20% chance of drawing the defensive cards after 1 draw- im not counting opening hand cz the math would be different there) If i were to run 37, the chances of drawing a defensive card , provided you cut 2 defensive card (and 1 other card) is 16.2%. Why run upstart if it only decreases your chance of seeing traps. You can argue "oh but theres swords too". Lets add sword to a pool of cards you wanna open with including maxx c. Thats 8 defensive cards 3 swords, 3 maxx c, so 14- 35% without upstart, and 32.4% if you cut 2 defensive cards for the upstarts.

6) drawing upstart after upstart sucks or opening with 2.

Overall i wouldnt run upstart. However, according to your playstyle, if you feel that you need more draw power and feel like consonance is being a drag, id much recommend upstart over consonance from testing (prefer uostart over consonance).

However i just prefer card trooper and traps.

Was my sample space (from testing) large enough to warrant an accurate conclusion? (approximately only 10 games). Maybe not since as sample size increases your results differ and variance decreases. Although i think if i tested more, i would just be more disappointed. Upstart is not a card you can throw in any deck just to reduce your deck size.

Standard dragons are definitely not suitable and even in dragunity im not a fan of it because although you are increasing consistency, you are sacrificing many important comboes and plays and disrupting synergy in the deck. Overall i think the dragunity build in TCG is very weak because they spend too much space on upstarts and stuff and disregard comboes with zephryos, redmd and garuda. Their average strong play is set up 1 rank 8 with backrow which is so easy to do in dragon ruler also. I think if dragunity are to become strong again, they need to take a different approach. Their strongest play needs to have mysteltain to get a combo off and even the end product doesnt seem all that appealing.

Thats all for today.
They pointed out these differences:

1) lack of debris dragons
2) presence of dragon shrines
3) no trigon/ kodomo dragon combo

well, the 1st thing is that in ocg, mermail is a very fast deck, and can easily outpace dragons. Thus, the focus on terraforming, and ancient fairy is very bad because those cards will just get Infantried and cleared very easily.

Imagine if you play vs mermail and you open a hand of terraforming ravine, big dragon, and you cant make a play and they just outswarm you turn 2, you auto lose. Thus if you are running shrine instead of terra, you get to make a big play. Furthermore, with cards like dragon ice + infantry combo from mermail, you are forced to have a follow up play when your main one gets disrupted.

Due to that, shrine is run in multiples and the trigon combo is just underhwelming. Other decks like firefist and verz are almost similar so i can atribute it to this mainly. In the mirror, you want to be able to access your colours asap too.

So, debris dragon is cut too, since there is no trigon combo to focus on afd. In fact, most japanese builds run few traps (some run lots too as they believe in player preference i assume), so using debris on a guard means you will synchro with guard and debris will become a blader target.

Now to discuss my tcg mythic dragon build.

I had a few testing games with Muci (german player) and discussion with Gruner last night and this build tested to be pretty good.

12 druler
3 maxx c
1 battle fader
1 corsesca
2 debris
1 kodomo dragon
2 flamvell guard
1 mythic wood
1 mythic water

2 shrine
3 ravine
3 sword
1 mst

1 6 sense
1 rftdd
1 compuls
1 warning
2 pwwb
1 torrential
1 trap stun

1 stardust
1 crimson
1 afd
1 brd
1 colossal
1 scrap
1 zera
1 star eater
2 dragosack
1 big eye
1 gk pearl
1 terror fang dire wolf
1 felgrand
1 draggluong

the maindeck is very simple, you dont run any unnecessary cards so that it doesnt affect the consistency. Mythics are generally only used vs rogue matchups and usually sided out in g2/3 in mirror. Mythics are horrible to draw, and serve as a liability when you banish your tidal and redox. However, running the 2 shrines (or more) nullifies the fact. If you run mythics with consonance you just flat out lose because of dead draws.

Shrine gives you leverage in the mirror in case u open with the shitty water mythic so that you dont flatout lose. Combine that with Maxxc or a protection trap and you're good to go. You basically only use it to make draggluong in the mirror which theoretically is nuts as its another big eye which cant be blader-ed and also an effect veiler for their dragons, unless you can otk with felgrand.

Ps: im not running stardust radiance because it isnt legal in my area and i usually test with europeans and Oceanians so we do not have access to it. It can easily just replace stardust dragon for tcg. For tcg USA i would also play emptiness, not sure in the main or side but definitely will run it.

Battle fader because the hype now is felgrand star eater combo. I have never liked battle fader and cant wait to change it back to scarecrow when the mythics hype die down.

No queen dragun djinn cz its underwhelming and you almost never make it. pearl is just better overall for beatsticks against evilswarms.

Everything else is very standard and normal. I feel that in ygo now, alot of the skill comes from deckbuilding and knowing what cards to play to maximise consistency and how to adjust towards the meta (most important aspect basically). There is lesser skill in gameplay compared to older formats like BF, plants, and goat control etc, but there is still an intensive amount of skill when it comes down to controlling resources. Basically, no matter how good a person is, the person's limiting factor is his deck. A good dragon mirror happens when both players have equal amount of resources and grinds it out for the win. No matter how good you are, if your deck sucks and you make wrong choices, you will still lose. Thus, to make sure you dont lose to shitty hands and cards, you need to make sure your main, and side has no unnecessary cards.

There is not much to explain because the game is quite simple at this point and you just have to give small dot points and players will understand why x is good, or why x is bad play etc. It doesnt take a genius to play yugioh, but it takes skill to build a good deck.

I will write an article about sidedecking soon because many people are still wrongly sidedecking and putting in either wrong cards or just oversiding -__-

Thats all for today.

mike9944http://www.blogger.com/profile/14655647418055737434noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-78316171109312306.post-2031722410169505022013-10-30T09:33:00.002-07:002013-10-30T21:53:31.694-07:00Playing the dragon mirror : TCG + current decklist ~ So, while lurking on dgz, i managed to see an article posted by claudio about the dragon mirror in the dgz thread. One of the comments by a fellow dgz-er went something like:

- too vague. only show fundamentals of using redox /blaster for offence/defence etc
- unclear direction and message as to whether mst was good or not and how ravine should be played. also didn't give implications if ravine was mst-ed and opponents ravine continues flowing etc.

He also mentioned that Claudio should have analysed the winner of YCSlondon's lists and gave pointers on which sidedeck method is optimal.

And there was the inspiration for my article !

I have not had time to update the blog lately because of finals but i have some spare time now to talk about yugioh.

The dragon mirror as of late has gone towards the direction of added traps and trap stuns. Trap stun is an insanely good card because you can negate important traps which hinder your set up or blow out cards like return/6sense.

So, there are a couple of directions that you could take with dragon mirror game 2/3s sidedecking plans.

1) Vanity fiend+ electric virus
2) elctric virus + debunk etc
3) debunks + mst /stun

Debunks + mst /stun is probably the best way to go because it is the most consistent method. Vanitys fiend is unreliable and i have never liked cards which take too much to set up and is going to lose to traps lke rageki break or mirror force or torrential etc.

electric virus is slightly more consistent and better but it depends alot on your opponent's methods meaning you need to act in accordance to his actions which in my opinion is very unflexible. Sometimes E virus can become dead in hand. In the dragon deck, you want to use your cards asap and have flexibility, this is not goat control where you can wait for a card to be good.

One thing i noticed from the dragon mirror in the YCS london builds in the mirror matches is that those decks tend to set alot of backrow in the first few turns and rely on grinding out those backrows. It seems entirely true that they have been seeing too many traps and not enough of their combo pieces. The best way to overpower your opponent in the dragon mirror is to have a good ratio of traps/ and fuel for your dragons.

If one draws too many traps and backrow cards and doesnt get the engine going while his opponent puts pressure, then one is going to be far behind.

One thing i have decided to try is Card carD. The idea behind it is to maximise the playability of your opening hands, meaning you either open a swords, cardcarD or a ravine into ancient fairy combo which immediately puts you far ahead of your opponent. In the YCS london feature matches i saw the players pass frequently during early games because they didnt have enough plays. CardcarD is good because it puts you ahead of your opponent. Using it in turn 2/3 if your opponent doesnt get going with a few backrow is so godly. Opening sword + card car = jizz.

Cards of consonance was undoubtedly one of the best cards in the deck, to help dig the combo pieces.I replaced consonance with cardcarD so that i didnt have to run 5 tuners and i could get away with 1 of each level 1 and 2 debris. Cardcar also let u just win turn 1, and in late game it becomes a dragon fodder for redox reborn effect which is very valuable. There is the argument that it could be dead, but so can consonance. I would rather have a dead monster than a dead consonance which does the same thing. Pitching debris for consonance is so dumb you only have 2 to use, asusming 1 for the ancient fairy combo and 1 for star eater / reborn plays.

12 druler
3 maxx c
1 scarecrow
1 corsisca
1 guard
1 kodomo dragon
2 debris dragon
2 card car D

3 ravine
3 sword
1 mst
1 terraforming

2 trap stun
1 6 sense
1 rftdd
1 torrent
1 compuls
1 warning
2 break

1 afd
1 zera
1 brd
1 armory arm
1 orient dragon
1 colossal
1 tra
1 scrap
1 star eater
1 stardust
1 blader
2 dracosack
1 big eye
1 gaia

1 dd crow
2 snipe hunter
1 dark hole
2 mst
2 xyz encore
2 debunk
2 skill drain
1 transmigration
1 eev
1 divine wrath

the deck is very standard.

card choices explanation:

1) no mythics. i did not think mythics fit with this build. mythiccs cannot be used together with consonance and stuff because it can cause cloggy hands. however mythics worked best with dragon shrine. i am currently working on a tcg build with shrine and mythics so stay tuned. i tested 1 earth mythic and it was extremely underwhelming

2) kodomo drragon- better trigon. kodomo looks shitty tho :(

3) no shrine- this build is not meant to work with mythics so i wont run shrine.

4) high trap count- traps win u the mirror. pronto. even warning is pretty good although 2k lp seems like alot, but u immediately win if u resolve it and it prevents u from losing 2k and field presence and control. i didnt run 3 pwwb/break because i still feel having 3 is too much because ravine and swords require cost to fuel too.

5) orient dragon- good card to banish ancient fairy dragon. afd is huge in the mirror. and having zera and orient is suffieicnt to kill it.

The rest is very standard and snipe hunter is very good cz u can use it to pressure your opponent especially in matchiups like spellboooks and anti meta deck. it is also very good vs stardust iron wall lock set up by dragunity when they go 1st. I didnt run metaion or refpanel because they are too expensive and kinda underwhelming especially refpanel. It is very good card but i feel debunk is better vs the mirror, and vs dragunity u should be more worried about their stardust iron wall lock rather than focusing on their draw spells. However, refpanel is very real threat although it is greatly dismissed by dgz players.

What i side vs various decks:

dragon mirror: 2 debunk,1 crow (when going 1st), 1 transmigration (when going 2nd) , 2 mst, 1 hole

spellbooks: 2 snipe hunter 1 dd crow 2 skill drain 2 mst 1 dark hole 1 wrath

dragunity ruler: 2 snipe hunter, 1 wrath, 1 crow 1 transmigration

verz- 2 snipe (going 2nd), 2 skill drain (going 1st side 2, going 2nd side 1), 2 mst, 1 wrath , 2 encore

constella- 2 snipe 2 skilldrain, 1 dark hole, 2 mst, 1 wrath, 1 eev (if i go 1st)

nothing else is very relevant so....

If you are wondering why i side so few cards vs mirror match it is because in the mirror match you must maintain full consistency and just remove unneccessary cards. i wont say what i side out because im too lazy but it is not hard. Just remember what Hoban said: you shouldnt be siding out your combo cards therefore i wont really side stuff lke terraforming or cardcarD so i replace stuff like break compuls which are meant to be replacements for my sided cards.

In the words of my now dead from ygo friend wesley , less is more, more is less.

Thats all for today.mike9944http://www.blogger.com/profile/14655647418055737434noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-78316171109312306.post-9698974811538934662013-10-28T08:38:00.001-07:002013-10-28T08:38:28.186-07:00Lady of the Lake + Imperial Iron WallLady of the Lake is a plaquespreader version for Noble Knights.

Like Plaquespreader, you can abuse Imperial iron wall with it so it remains in the grave forever.

With no other cards which conflict with iron wall in noble knights, this could be a very big combo.

Iron wall shuts off dragons which is the most relevant part.

I have not read or investigated anything about noble knights so i have nothing to comment about the deck.

mike9944http://www.blogger.com/profile/14655647418055737434noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-78316171109312306.post-35989215760118971392013-10-15T10:50:00.000-07:002013-10-20T00:34:43.042-07:00D Ruler decklist ~So, at this point of the format i will share my druler decklist and explain card choices and why some cards are there and why some aren't.

There should be no problem with this because drulers are an everchanging deck and there is no fixed list since they adapt as the format goes on.

12x druler
3x maxx c
2x corsisca
1x flamvel guard
1x swift scarecrow
1x trigon
1x fogking
2x debris dragon

3x sacred sword
2x card of consoncance
3x dragon ravine
1x terraforming
1x dark hole
1x mst

1x mirror force
1x return from different dimension
1x torrential tribute
2x pwwb
1x sixth sense

1x angel of zera
1x scrap dragon
1x armory arm
1x star eater
1x crimson blader
2x colossal fighter
1x black rose dragon
2x ancient fairy dragon
1x stardust dragon
1x big eye
2x mpb dragosack
1x gaia

2x electric virus
2x ferret
2x mst
2x xyz encore
2x trap stun
2x divine wrath
2x debunk
1x castle of dragon soul

so first of all the decklist:

Monsters:

1) Fog king- not very popular yet in TCG although the latest ycs winner mains 1. I tested it and loved it because it was:

a) tidal foolish burial food is very important t1.
b) debris food is strong follow up play
c) summoning him is equivalent to summoning a tuner and lets u make big eye and steal their stuff while you protect your cards with backrow
d) combo:

debris - fogking- summon dragon- make dragosack- make 2 token- sync ancient fairy dragon.

That alone is a very strong first turn play and if you have a maxx c backed up you are in a very strong position. Also can be used with sacred sword and stuff.
e) Fogking + electriv virus = bye ophion!
f) Fogking tribute 2 dragons clear opponents monster for game by avoiding scarecrow

2) dark hole- this card felt like reborn and hole last format. it may seem redundant sometimes if you;re in a commanding game state but it is too powerful not to run. Breaking up big fields in mirror is too strong as well as against random firefist anti meta decks or constellars. Nobody really makes stardust dragon in mirror so much and even taking out 2 tokens from sack can do alot.

3) 2x consonance / 1x terraforming ratio- i opted not to cut consonance because this card singlehandedly made dragons tier 1 again this format. When i was testing earlier in the format i would constantly beat dragon with mermails, however once they started running consonance and the deck sped up so fast and other decks just couldnt keep up. i feel 2 is the right number which is not too many and also lets u dig into your deck for your traps. terraformin at 1 because it is just right, if you run 2, you may experience dead draws or ravine hands with no real traps and no real protection.

4) pwwb over break- currently testing pwwb over break because pwwb is way more versatile. Aside from being a pseudo debunk (this comes up alot more than you think), it gets rid of big monsters and by not destroying them, your reducing your opponents fuel in the mirror. By pwwb-ing ophion, they cant make a kerykion play next turn. also testng pwwb after you started playing perfect circle era again just makes you feel why people would set stuff or play into situations where they get killed by wing blast. However my decision isnt fixed i could well go back to break if i dont like it vs rogue decks.

5) 6 sense. Obvious reasons but i cut book of moon for it. Book is a very good card but 6 sense is just much better. I had torrential and mirror in because those 2 are very strong blowout cards which nobody expects or sometimes they cant help but play into it. It is very hard to put pressure on your opponent if your constantly playing around mirror force, so people tend to disregard it even though they know its a real threat. Thus if you have force, you can cause a uphold swing of momentum. The reason why i run cards like force, tt, and break is because like rftdd and sixth sense, all 3 cards cause a swing in momentum which is important in the game. If people start playing around force too much i will cut it back for book.

6) no vanity emptiness- i have never mained emptiness or sided it at all this format because i never liked a card which can potentially neg you and is only good if your in a commanding position. Its not that important in the mirror cos most of the time opponent ditch out 1/2 monsrers and other traps do the same thing. it will be going into the side once stardust radiance becomes legal in australia.

extra deck:

1) Angel of zera- most people hate this card in america/australia but i agree with the europeans that zera is needed. zera can act as a big beatstick in the mirror which is alot more valuable than we think alot of times. People are forced to go into sack (which requires alot of resources), or scrap which are only 2 answers. The extra summon if banished is a plus if your playing against rogue deckss and can be very useful.

2) 2x colossal. just something im tryng out. 2nd colossal because colossal applies pressure in the mirror and being able to surprise opponents is good. 2nd colossal to revive blader is good too as you still have 1 more. colossal is usually the synchro i go into the most which fits my playstyle.

Apart from that the rest is really standard. Not maining gaios although i run fog king because i dont believe in commiting to an xyz which loses to raigeki break/wingblast. You could argue making any synchro is similar, but gaios has been underwhelming since most of the time with fog king theres a better play and it just doesnt seem necessary.

side deck:

1) lack of vanity fiend- similar reason to gaius. There are people who still run breaks and fiend seems just too gimmicky.

2) fire fencing ferret- surprisingly good card to pressure with in spellbook matchup. In books you need to put as much pressure as possible and sometimes summoning this and a dragon is all you need. Kycoo is getting popular so ferret makes the matchup more favorable. Good vs constellar etc too since the deck is bound to see an increase in play. I have always thought constellars were the best deck to go against dragons (better than verz) because the extra tenki firefist plays help alot in the grindfest.

3) trap stun- good card. i chose to run this over decree so i could resolve my traps. This card is surprisingly good in the mirror too i side 1 in because it can kill so many things like return, vanity and chainable traps not to mention refpanel. Would not bring 2 in because it sucks to draw multiples.

4) castle of dragon souls- i was maining this but it came up too often where i would just draw it with a bad hand and wish it was another real trap. Ideally its only good in the mirror, and not very good against anything else, so i decided to bring it in for the mirror. This is only under trial, if a better card comes along i will cut it first.

5) no skill drain- dont believe in paying extra 1k. eg- summon kycoo + 1k = 2.8 k damage which is painful and if they follow up with mst or something you lose. May give it a shot again as the meta shapes. Drawing drain when you have no real plays is bad. That is the main reason why i dont run it. Imagine a hand of 2x tuner 1x dragon 1x drain 1x mst 1x trap. Drain doesnt do much in this situation so to minimize inconsistency i cut it.

6) no 2nd scarecrow- i dont like siding too many cards for the mirror. I usually side 1x virus, 1x mst, 1x stun, 2x debunk if i go first, and if i go 2nd, 1-2x virus, 1x mst, 2x debunk. Going over 6 is hard and i still havent found a perfect side for dragons that im very comfortable with.

Thats all for today that has been a long wall of text, if you have any questions or comments, just shoot.mike9944http://www.blogger.com/profile/14655647418055737434noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-78316171109312306.post-80589940140475168092013-10-14T02:47:00.002-07:002013-10-14T11:08:07.747-07:00RETURN FROM THE DIFFERENT DIMENSIONI think it is time to come back to blogging, I have missed I quite abit, and this format In tcg calls for a lot of discussion constantly as more and more tech cards pop up in dragon decks, as the format changes, more and more tech cards and variant improvise the mirror. This is a mirror of the last format honestly except we don't have rejuvenation to make things worse.

There have also been many interesting tournaments happening in the TCG with stuff like ARG circuit, Europe's (Germany's particularly) tournaments and other stuff.

Many stuff like Verz and constellar finals in ARG circuit is also worth discussing :O

I will be posting more content soon so look forward to it !!

A while after I stopped blogging, I had a chat with 1 of my Singapore friends and he said that my previous blogging style could get sort of messy. I reread some of my old posts and found it quite true. So in the future expect more concise, planned out posts.

This is mainly due to uni, life etc. every time I play on dn I spend at least 2-3 hours when I coulda been using my time doing smtg else more productive.

This means no blog posts, and no playing etc, and at most I will be on dn watching ppl, or testing with friends for their tourneys etc.

Last minute advice for ppl in tcg - 3 veiler is pretty real, like 3 is needed to stop temperance of prophecy, and you should be saving your veiler only for that, and never for an early game batel. The world is strong win condition.

The current tcg format is very theme based, and with all the generic strong cards gone from the game, the best deck will be the most broken and consistent theme. Atm its spellbook , mermail or dragons. Don't expect so much "variance" as you thought when the list was first released because no matter how many bf whirlwind you have, the deck will never have as much options and synergy compared to new themes.

The end.

Will see u guys again during regionals and national season next year !

If you arent in the TCG you prolly wanna skip this post because theres a huge wall of text.

Firstly, I am gonna say 1 thing: If you all thought decks from the past will be revived and the meta will be SUPER DIVERSE, you're all wrong. It will be much more diverse than the previous shiddy format, but definitely not to the point of any deck has a standing chance to win.

It came to me slightly that the best decks will still be the theme decks with the best support and has the highest level of power creep. When LFN msg-ed me yesterday and told me that he too noticed the same thing, it confirmed my suspicion. Despite how good decks like BF or zombie suddenly become with the support of whirlwind to 3, and mezuki/plaque to 2, it still cant keep up with new decks like mermail and fire fist 4 axis.

So, i will list out my observations and testing:

take note the dragon deck im talking abt is 4 dragons and is NOT dragon plant, however with tetherwolf and DDR engine.

Day 1:

Personal Playtesting:

tested mermails vs hieratics: mermail dominant (w LGQ)

tested dragons vs hieratics: lost first round abt 1-4, won 2nd round abt 2-1 after modding the deck. Even to say the least. Came down alot to who had the hand trap. (w LGQ)

I did get some testing with yanni but i cant remember what happened or what decks were involved, i think there was mermail or dragons.

Observation: (watching australian team w Bodan, C.Hanson, Jono etc)

spellbooks vs bf: spellbooks dominant
spellbooks vs mermail- evenly matched for the games i watched.

Input from Jono:

Dragon Plant vs WU- WU wins
Dragon plant overall weak compared to many decks.

Day 2:

Personal Playtesting:

Mermail vs dragons w Phantom beast plane engine - mermail won marginally (2-1) (w/ Nelsown)
mermail vs dragons - 1-1 (unfinished game with Joshua Schmidt.)

mermail vs BF: mermail won by a longshot
mermail vs BF OCG : mermail won (with jason)

Observation:

mermail vs dragunity 4 dragons : dragunity won g1 (watched only 1 game between joshua schmidt vs michel gruner)
mermail vs FF 4 axis : even for games i watched (abt 2) (between C.Hanson and A$AP YGO i think?)

Input from LFN:

Zombies > laval
Prophecy > zombies

So, these are the products of my testing and observations ^
If there is anybody i've forgotten sorry lol

I am biased towards Mermail, and because it is the deck i will most likely be playing, i will talk about matchups from its POV:

I have not tested vs Infernity, or Verz and Constella which IMO are all good decent decks too. IMO Mermail will still be superior to Verz as before overall because it has alot of options (I.e: 1 card temtempo, Infantry, traps, verz opening bad etc etc)

The same should be said with constella, because Mermail has Infantry to answer Pleaides.

I should test VS infertnity soon because it seems like a very powerful deck.

The build of mermail im playing will be undisclosed but then i am maining 2 veilers, but 0 Max C, and running at least 2 MST (adding the 3rd soon).

I have not come to the conclusion if C is worth maining atm but im definitely sure veiler is pretty good (so far)

At the same time, 3 MST is definitely a staple so far this format because you wanna hit:

1) abysphere
2) traps and scapegoat freshly set)
3) coth and DDR
4) black whirlwind, tenki, WU factory
5) Grand spellbook tower Le Maison
6) Opposing MSTs

I have heard Madolches are decent but i've yet to play any so i will not comment on it.

For now, i would pick mermail as a better deck compared to dragons mainly because mermails have more options and dragons are incredibly linear. However the dragon plant version seems really inferior because it is inconsistent.

I honestly am not sure if scapegoat will make a big impact this format but i lost 1 game to dragons because he had 2 consecutive scapegoat which i had to deal with in 2 consecutive turns and he turned the tide by making big eye and something.

So: to sum it up:

1) Decks that are real are:

Mermails, Spellbooks, FF 4 axis, Dragunity 4 dragon engine (gruner's build was dragunity engine mixed with all 4 Dragon rulers which was genius IMO):

I am under the opinion that dragon rulers can only survive with dragunity engine and if your not running that engine, it will be very bad. I love the fact shock master isnt legal because we finally get to play ygo :)

It seems reminiscent towards the post tachyon format except the format is slightly more balanced..

2) 3 MST is needed

3) The best deck will be the deck which has the most options. In this case IMO will be spellbooks, mermails, or the dragunity ruler engine. Dragunity rulers seem incredibly broke bar Maxx C and Veiler (dies to the 2 cards), but is probably more consistent than the others, with 3 ravine, 3 tempest, and several backup plays if you meet a veiler on atumus)

Infernity seems similar to d rulers, if you start first, and your opponent has ntg to stop you, the game is 100% yours in game 1 when you vomit your field. Because the format has not shaped whether hand traps are needed, infernity seems solid because it will almost nett u a game 1. However losing access to shock ruler is very painful to it, although you can still make doom orgy dragon.

4) A good amount of backrow in mermail is good. Apart from Abyssphere, maybe some warning torrent bth mirror force?

So, this is basically what i've come up with. I will test more to include madolches, karakuri, infenrity and verz. If you guys have tested stuff which i've not factored in, please feel free to comment and share your opinions. At the same time, if you guys have any disagreements with what i posted, please feel free to share and discuss too. If you have any questions about my opinions, do ask too and vice versa.

I hope this information will help the TCG players in playtesting, especially for YCS Toronto which will be held next week. All the best to the players attending.mike9944http://www.blogger.com/profile/14655647418055737434noreply@blogger.com13tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-78316171109312306.post-58071671411908674122013-08-20T18:16:00.002-07:002013-08-21T10:24:44.968-07:00Tcg forbidden listIs the most interesting list I have ever ever seen in my entire fking life

I actually love it because it hit alot of cards that don't allow you to play yugioh like shock ruler, soul drain, d fissure, cosmos etc.

With that said I am 100% sure dragons/mermail will still be somewhere tier 1.

Hitting backrow cards like ced, bth was all the icing on the cake.

However with all the generic backrow cards nerfed , say hi bitches.

its still too early to say what decks are real or not, because realistically, it depends on how good the deck is built, or how much synergy the cards still have left. EG; i think decks that are the most consistent at pulling off combos will be good (mermail because of its internal interactions)

I also like how it hit just about every wacky strong card like gateway, card destruction etc

Wow KONAMI just wow.

You never fail to surprise.

I'm under the assumption tcg and OCG will have different formats, so OCG KONAMI let tcg KONAMI finally take control of their own banlists. Then they gave us this.

For once, I'm actually thankful I play in tcg now.
